More About Psychics

For this week’s blog, I wanted to look further into psychics. Although we briefly touched on them at the beginning of class, I have always been fascinated by psychics, and I wanted to learn more about what they truly are. The general definition of a psychic is “relating to or denoting faculties or phenomena that are apparently inexplicable by natural laws, especially involving telepathy or clairvoyance.” In Western culture, we typically picture a psychic as a woman with a crystal ball charging twenty dollars for a palm reading on the side of the road. While that stereotype does exist in the United States, psychics look very different across other cultures.

One of the earliest forms of psychic practice comes from Ancient Greece. In Greek mythology, oracles were seen as sources of divine wisdom, and people traveled long distances to seek counsel from priestesses throughout history. Today, in India, gurus and yogis serve as spiritual leaders who guide those who seek them through practices of meditation, yoga, and spirituality. In many African cultures, people turn to spiritual elders and diviners for wisdom and guidance on their spiritual journeys.

While many people dismiss the validity of psychics, it is important to recognize the relevance they have maintained across cultures and throughout history. Whether what they say is “true” or not, if their guidance provides comfort, stability, or a sense of meaning, psychics can be a valuable tool in exploring one’s spirituality. However, there is a fine line between offering spiritual guidance and claiming to determine someone’s future or presenting predictions as unquestionable facts. Ultimately, what a psychic says should not be taken literally. Psychics are most useful when seen as guides who help individuals connect more deeply with their own spirituality, rather than as fortune tellers who can predict the future.

  1. Great posting on the history of psychics. Ancient history is filled with oracles who were consulted for prophecies, and were fought over what oracles predicted. But there remains a lot of fraud in current psychics who advertise online. People turn to psychics because they deeply believe that their psychic can make their ex love them again, bring them enormous wealth, or put them in touch with a dead relative. Such faith is easily manipulated. There are undoubtedly psychics who really believe in their gift of clairvoyance and who sincerely help people. But the majority manipulate their customers.
