Ponzi Scheme Thoughts
During our most recent class, we talked about historical tricksters and swindlers like Frank Abagnale and Charles Ponzi. What really stuck with me was the fact that almost every point in history has had its own major scammer, and because of this, new “Ponzi schemes” keep showing up and are basically unavoidable. As society evolves, so do the opportunities to deceive people. The objectives of tricksters have remained consistent, but the tools and people they target are changing with every new emergence, making their schemes even more unpredictable and widespread.
Today, the evolution of technology (especially AI) has made
scamming so much easier and harder to spot. Someone can hide behind a screen
and create fake identities to reach people at a much greater scale than ever before.
In addition, they can adapt their approach and target the “weakest” of people
at a much greater rate than tricksters historically. Deepfakes and online
disinformation make spotting a scam even more difficult. Overall, it feels
impossible to stop new scams from popping up. The sad truth is there will always be people
willing to manipulate others if it benefits them. The best way to combat the
issue is to make it harder for them by spreading awareness, learning what red
flags to look for, and slowing down to double-check things that seem suspicious
or too good to be true. Being informed and cautious is essentially the best and only protection we have.
